Your Desire for "More" isn't Entirely About What's-in-it-for-You

“I should be thankful for what I have. It’s selfish of me to want more when I already have so much.”

As a coach, I hear a variation of this sentiment all the time. I’ve said it myself.  Why do we buy into this lie, believing that if we pursue the burning dream inside ourselves, we'll lose what we have or be perceived as greedy, ungrateful, or worse?

What if we’ve been looking at it all wrong all this time?

If you were to dig into this, really understand it, you’d fund the underlying fire: Your passion to offer more, not to have more.

Challenge your thinking:

From: I have a great job and should be thankful. It pays the bills and more, and the people are great. I enjoy the work. Why do I want more?

To: I am thankful for the job I have, the work I do, the people, and the pay. And I have a lot more to offer. Therefore, I’m going to pursue my dream of becoming an entrepreneur.

From: I have a beautiful family, home and family. I should be thankful. I’m surrounded by people who love me. I should spend my time serving them joyfully. My dream of learning to (dance, paint, pay the Cello, etc.) is selfish.

To: I am thankful for the beautiful family, home, and community. And I have a lot more to offer the world. Therefore, I am going to pursue my dream of becoming a cello player. Because I know learning to play will bring me peace and fire up my creative side so that, when I’m with others, I can be more fully present and interested in them.

You Aren't Done Growing

While we were children, we spent a great deal of energy growing intellectually, spiritually, physically, and emotionally.  We were never meant to stop growing once we became adults. Only now, the energy we expended to grow physically is available to continue to grow intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. When we grow this way, we offer more value to the world.  It is in the offering that our passion is ignited. It just so happens that in giving, we also receive.

Give yourself permission to follow your dreams and passions

If you look to the root of WHY you want to accomplish more, it’s because in that journey you’ll offer more value to the world. When you think more about what you offer, suddenly it becomes more selfish NOT to pursue that passion.

Don’t stop yourself from pursuing your dreams because you already have it pretty good.  When you stop there, you deprive the world of the greater value that you have to offer.

That Desire for More: What if it's not about you?

Don’t buy into the lie that “wanting more” is all about you. Think of the people (animals, environment, etc.) who will be impacted in some way by OFFERING more. Ask yourself, “Why do I want it?” And keep asking “Why?” until you get to the core. I’m willing to bet the impact is not just about what’s in it for you. (If it we're you wouldn't be thinking, "Shouldn't I be content?")

Embrace the AND

You can be immensely grateful for everything and everyone in your world. AND you can follow your dreams and desires. By investing your heart, mind, and soul into pursuing more, you are adding more to this world that only you can give.

This is not a zero-sum game. Life is an infinite game. It’s meant to be played to the fullest.
