BECOMING: Manage the Moments

When it comes to executing your goals, there is no substitute for massive action.  If all it took was a little motivation, we'd all be living our whole and authentic selves.

But motivation is fleeting.  We need to manage those moments where motivation fails us and we just don't feel like doing what must be done.

Managing the Moments has two components:

  1. Create a time and energy management system that you follow with unwavering determination.

  2. Practice integrity in the moment of choice.

"A goal without a plan is just a dream."

~Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Without a time and energy management system, every day you face the task of figuring out how to do what you want to do. Most of the time you just default to what is easier and more comfortable. This never results in achieving your highest potential. It leaves you with inconsistent bursts of activity and high levels of stress.

Start with a plan.

Be very clear on what you want. If your goal seems to be out into the future - longer than 12 weeks, break it down into smaller pieces.  Ask, what can be done in the next 12 weeks to advance my goal?  This is your new goal.

  • Anything that takes longer than 12 weeks will lose momentum

  • 12 weeks is long enough to see meaningful results. When you don't see results, you lose the momentum and commitment to the goal.

  • 12 weeks is short enough to maintain the capacity to pivot when unforeseen circumstances throw you off balance

As you create your plan:

  • Each step must be stated as an ACTION in a full sentence.

  • Break it down by week.  Decide on Sunday exactly what you will do and when you will do it to advance the goal.

  • Keep it realistic.

  • Edit your Environment as a part of your action plan.

  • Book it with time blocks.  Make an appointment in your calendar for when you are going to do the specific actions that will advance your goal.  If you can't get your plan to work on paper, you most certainly won't get it to work in real life.

If you aren't creating results you want, if you are stressed out and overwhelmed by how busy you are, you need a better time and energy management system.  Schedule a complimentary strategy session today to customize a system that works for you.

Practice Integrity in the Moment of Choice

Practicing integrity in the moment of choice means making decisions and taking actions that align with your values and principles, even when it may be difficult or inconvenient. Because you've already created a plan that reflects these values and principles, it also means doing what you said you were going to do when you said you would do it. Not when you "feel like it."

Motivation is not required to get started.  It only takes a decision.

Motivation can be fleeting and unpredictable. Waiting for it to strike before taking action can lead to missed opportunities and unfulfilled goals. Instead, create habits and routines that allow you to consistently work towards your objectives, even on days when you don't feel particularly motivated.

Of course, it's also important to note that taking action when you don't feel motivated doesn't mean completely disregarding your emotions. It's important to acknowledge and address any underlying issues or sources of dissatisfaction that may be hindering your motivation. However, once you've identified and addressed these issues, it's important to commit to taking consistent action towards your goals, even on days when you don't feel like it.

When you are BECOMING the best version of yourself and the kind of person it takes to reach your goals, there is no substitute for action. No one is going to come and do the work for you.  This will require getting out of your comfort zone.  That can be a scary thing.  It's easier when you have a plan.
